Located in the northeastern part of the state, the city of Commerce, TX offers excellent fishing opportunities in nearby lakes, rivers, and artificial reservoirs. If you are looking for a fun and exciting plan to spend the weekend with your friends, here are three excellent fishing spots you can reach in less than one hour from the city.

1. Jim Chapman Lake

Located approximately 20 miles east of downtown Commerce, Jim Chapman Lake is one of the best-known fishing destinations in the region. Created in the early 1990s with the construction of the Jim Chapman Dam on the South Sulphur River, this lake is an important source of water for the North Texas Municipal Water District. Since it was established, it has also been a popular recreational spot among residents of Commerce and other nearby cities.

One of the best places to visit if you want to go fishing here is Cooper Lake State Park, which offers fishing piers and boat ramps. Open every day from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, this place can be reached in about 25 minutes by car from Commerce via route TX-24. Some of the fish species you will find while fishing at Jim Chapman Lake include blue catfish, channel catfish, largemouth bass, striped bass, and crappie.

2. Lake Fork Reservoir

Another popular spot among local anglers, Lake Fork Reservoir boasts a surface area of more than 27,000 acres and is home to large populations of largemouth bass, sunfish, white crappie, black crappie, white bass, and channel catfish. Located approximately 40 miles south of Commerce, this reservoir can be reached in less than one hour via route TX-154.

Established by the Texas Parks and Wildlife in the 1980s, Lake Fork Reservoir was originally conceived as a bass fishing lake. Since it opened to the public, it has been considered one of the best fishing destinations in the entire state, holding 15 of the top 20 Texas State Record largemouth bass specimens ever caught. Public boat ramps and fishing piers can be found all around the lake.

3. Caddo National Grasslands

Covering nearly 18,000 acres and established in the 1930s, Caddo National Grasslands is a well-known recreational destination and an excellent spot to go on a fishing trip with your friends and family. Offering public access to several small lakes, this nature reserve is located just 40 miles north of Commerce. Some of the most commonly found fish species include largemouth bass, sunfish, blue catfish, and channel catfish.
