Ensuring your tires are properly inflated is essential for keeping you safe behind the wheel of your Malibu, Blazer, or Silverado. Tires inflated to the proper PSI will increase their lifespan, save fuel, and improve handling. Below, your Chevy dealership shares helpful tips on how to check tire pressure.

Perform Pressure Checks on Cold Tires

For the best results, the most suitable time to check your Chevy’s tire pressure is when the tires are cold. Tire pressure is affected by the heat generated through friction while driving. Check the pressure before you drive anywhere or wait at least four hours after driving your car for the tires to cool down before checking the PSI or pounds per square inch, the measurement used for tire pressure.

Take Note of the Recommended PSI

The recommended pressure for each tire is on a sticker inside your driver’s door or your owner’s manual. Keep in mind that there are different pressure levels for the front and rear tires. Write down the PSI for each tire to ensure you inflate them to the correct levels.

Use a Tire Pressure Gauge

To check the pressure levels of your tires, you may use either a standard or digital tire pressure gauge. The pressure gauge uses PSI as the unit of measurement to provide the readings. We recommend using a digital gauge for the most accurate reading.

Check the Pressure

Park your car on a level surface and start by picking a tire, unscrewing, and removing the cap from the air valve. Press the gauge firmly onto the open stem. You’ll hear a hiss of air. Hold it there for a few seconds for a precise reading.

Write the Readings Down

Write the gauge’s reading down next to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure for that tire. Continue to take the pressure readings of all the tires. Be sure to replace the cap if the PSI is correct. Keep the caps safe if the pressure is too low or high until you have adjusted the PSI to the recommended levels.

Inflate the Tires to the Recommended PSI

When comparing the readings to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI, inflate the tires to the proper levels if the pressure is lower than it should be. However, be careful not to overinflate them, as it could cause damage. In case of overinflation, use the back of the gauge to push down on the pin of the stem to release excess air. Check the remaining pressure regularly with the gauge until the level is at the recommended PSI, and replace the cap.

Keeping your Chevy’s tires inflated to the correct pressure levels will extend the life of your tires and keep you safe. Incorrect inflation can lead to increased wear, gas mileage, and a higher risk of blowouts. Swing by Commerce Chevrolet today, and our certified technicians will inspect your tires for wear and damage, perform a tire rotation to ensure even wear, and inflate them to the proper PSI.
