When it comes to scenic drives, there aren’t many better states than Texas. Whether you’re in Commerce, TX or a different part of the state, you won’t have to drive far to witness some awe-inspiring natural beauty.

1. Canyon Sweep

Canyon Sweep is a 119-mile route that begins in the small town of Quitaque and takes you north toward Palo Duro Canyon State Park. This majestic natural attraction is nicknamed “The Grand Canyon of Texas”.

Once you arrive, it’s possible to drive through the canyon itself. To do this, follow directions toward the Texas Lighthouse Trail. It’ll take you on a 16-mile route that allows you to experience the best of the picturesque red rock formations. If you own a capable off-road vehicle such as the Buick Enclave, this could be the most enjoyable road trip for you and your family.

2. El Camino Real Highway (Nearest Commerce, TX)

This 540-mile route will take you from the Toledo Bend Reservoir in east Texas all the way to San Antonio. This is arguably the most famous road trip in Texas, and it’s the nearest to Commerce of the three drives recommended in this guide. It’s a long journey, but there are plenty of beautiful pit-stops for those who want to split their trip.

You could enjoy hiking or birdwatching at Sabine National Forest, which you’ll find along the way. The prehistoric village at Caddo Mounds State Historic Site is also an enjoyable spot for history lovers. Mission Tejas State Park, Brazos River, and the historic town of St. Augustine are other nearby places of interest.

3. Devil’s Backbone

This 51-mile loop connects the small towns of Wimberley and Blanco. Locals say that the path is haunted by the spirits of Native Americans, particularly the stretch along Purgatory Road, but the route itself is completely safe to drive. In parts, the scenery will remind you of classic Wild Wild West movies.

If you do venture along this route, make sure to stop off at Jacob’s Well swimming hole. This is the second-largest fully submerged cave in Texas and a great place to cool off from the summer heat. You’ll have to make a reservation and pay a small fee if you want to swim. If you don’t take a dip, the surrounding area still makes for a beautiful hike.
